Ratings Explanation

Adult Themes: Young Lemony is part of a secret program that takes him away from his family. He is safe, relatively, but we are not informed of the exact nature of his family situation. A young girl’s father is kidnapped. She is manipulated by the kidnapper to steal and lie in order to potentially get her father back.

Synopsis

“Who Could That Be at This Hour?” showcases Lemony Snicket in his early years. He enters an apprenticeship with S. Theodora Markson (what does the S stand for?) as his mentor and together they are tasked with solving the mysterious theft of the Bombinating Beast in the town of Stain’d-by-the-Sea. Actually it seems like a pretty straight forward crime and Lemony quickly discovers the missing object in the real owner’s possession. So why would a woman claim to have been robbed when she wasn’t? This question and many others surface as Lemony sleuths his way through the story and we end up with more questions (right or wrong) than when we began. Hopefully the coming book will answer some of the perplexing questions and satisfy our curiosity about the true nature of Lemony Snicket’s past.

A fun read for both advanced and reluctant readers. Easy enough reading for 4th graders but interesting enough to keep more advanced readers engaged as well.

My favorite quote in the book: “Scolding must be very, very fun, otherwise children would be allowed to do it.”
