Synopsis

After the redistricting of his neighborhood, Robert Arthur is starting 7th grade at the newly constructed, eco-friendly, state of the art Lovecraft Middle School. As luck would have it, the one person Robert recognizes in the sea of strangers is Glenn Torkells, the bully who has tormented him for years. If paying Glenn’s “dweeb tax” isn’t bad enough, strange things are afoot at Lovecraft. Rats appear in every single locker on the first day of class, twin sisters mysteriously disappear and Robert discovers an ominous door in the library that leads to an old attic in the brand new school. But along with all the weirdness of middle school, Robert discovers a new, fascinating pet, an intriguing friend and a mystery that is creepier than he ever imagined. Armed with courage and good friends, Robert is up for the task of bringing down the evil lurking at Lovecraft Middle School.

Professor Gargoyle is the first book in the new series “Tales From Lovecraft Middle Schoolby Charles Gilman. The second book, The Slither Sisters is due out January 15, 2013.

Professor Gargoyle would be an excellent book for reluctant readers. It is a quick read with large print, but also has plenty of intrigue and suspense. I especially like the idea that you never know where you might find an unexpected friend! It is rare to find a paranormal series with such mild content so I am happy to recommend it for readers grades 4 and up. It would also be a fun read aloud for a family.
